FEBRUARY: Delgirl

“Three singers, three songwriters, one voice....”
Ask Lynn Vare, Deirdre Newall and Erin Morton to describe the Delgirl sound and they’ll scratch around for the right words. Jazz-tinged acoustic country-blues? Harmony-rich folk-reggae fusion?

Ask them to play, and their songs do the talking, revealing musical roots nourished by the warm waters of the tropics, the cool mountain streams of North America and the fertile soils of their New Zealand homeland.

These multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriters from Dunedin make real music, bedded in tradition but speaking of today’s laughs, loves and losses in one clear voice. Delgirl aren’t out to change the world, but they don’t mind leaving a few smiles in their wake.

Delgirl landed the Recording Industry Association’s (RIANZ) award for 2008 Folk Album of the Year for their debut long player Two, Maybe Three, Days Ride...

“The more you listen, the more the little details become apparent; the kind of deliberate sonic punctuation marks that make the difference between a kitchen sing-along and a recording of the type you want to listen to over and over again – which is exactly what this is.” – Nick Bollinger, Radio NZ National The Sampler, 13/11/07

APRIL: Adams&Gavin

Richard Adams (violin and vocals) Nigel Gavin (guitar and vocals
Great music and art comes about by some kind of alchemy.
New Zealand musicians Richard Adams and Nigel Gavin have crafted their art in rehearsal rooms and recording studios, and are now presenting their magic in concert halls and festivals venues at home, Australia, the US and Europe.

Violinist Adams is a gifted painter whose work has been exhibited internationally and who believes the visual and musical side of his personality each set the other on fire. Richard has played for many years in the popular Nairobi Trio.

Guitarist Gavin is probably better known than most people realise.
He has played with the Nairobi Trio, the Jews Brothers and Bravura.
He created the guitar orchestra Gitbox Rebellion, and has been on albums by Wayne Gillespie, Whirimako Black, and most notably with Robert Fripp.

Here is that rare chemistry where each inspires the other, where melodies can twist on an emphasis, and the improvisation is instinctively taken in a new and rewarding direction.

JULY: Hot Club Sandwich

Hot Club Sandwich is a Wellington based trio featuring founder members Andrew London (guitar) and Terry Crayford (bass) with the addition of saxophonist James Tait Jameson.

Hot Club Sandwich present a repertoire of original songs about life in New Zealand from the point if view of the average middle class, middle aged, back yard bloke. Themes include coffee culture, TV evangelists, rugby fans, fashion victims, consumerism, youth culture and Wellington night life, lifestyle farmers, incomprehensible computer technology and appliance shopping. There are laughs a plenty with some satirical and provocative edges.

One reviewer, writing in the August 2005 issue of Downbeat USA magazine, the world’s most widely-read jazz publication, describes their style as:

“warmly appealing with eccentric edges….having the time of their lives getting a handle on bluegrass, country blues, jug band, pop-folk, vaudeville music, and jazz á là Quintette du Hot Club de France, then adding devilishly clever wordplay for an old-time music of their own”

Hot Club Sandwich have played Arts and Jazz festivals around the Pacific and were recent guest artists on Radio National’s “Musical Chairs” programme as well as TV One’s “Good Morning” show. Their songs have featured in NCEA English papers and movie soundtracks.

AUGUST: Antiques Rogue Show

Due to an overwhelming response, demand and downright pleading, the team that brought you Geezers and the record breaking Antiques Rogue Show tour of ‘07, head back on the road!

In the tradition of the venerable BBC Classic “Antiques Road Show” Patrick Duffy and his equally antiquated side kick once again showcase their artistic and sensitive sides.

Patrons are invited into the genteel world of stately manors, country fetes, and local women’s institutes as they bring along their valuable family antiques and treasured heirlooms… or the awful Toby mug they got from cousin Raelene for their wedding and haven’t the heart to throw out.

Under the guise of British antique experts and with the help of the antique’s current owner, the boys will unfold the mystery and intrigue of the selected piece in a way that has no particular relevance to real history, artistic appreciation or any worthwhile knowledge whatsoever.
We promise that though the history, knowledge and valuations will be completely bogus, the comedy is 100% genuine.
